I’ve been awol from this blog for awhile (I do tend to come and go), tucked away working on some writing projects – one of which I’ll share with you soon. But I wanted to pop back on to wish you all a very Happy New Year! According to SpirtualTok, 2026 is shaping up to be something special. I certainly wish that for all of us.
One of my favourite things to do at the cusp of a new year is to work out my Tarot Card of the Year. This card offers a lens on the kinds of experiences, themes, and lessons you might encounter over the next twelve months.
There’s a simple numerological formula that gives you a number which correlates with one of the Life Lesson cards (also known as the Major Arcana). This is your Tarot Year Card.
Because of the way the system works, each year you shift forward into the next Life Lesson card. For example, if your Tarot Year Card in 2025 was The Lovers, in 2026 it will be The Chariot. However, at the turn of each decade or century, you are sent to a different part of the Major Arcana, and begin a fresh cycle.
The formula is this: You add up your birth day + your birth month + the current calendar year. Then you work out which Life Lesson card matches the number you got. If the number is greater than 21, you add the digits together.
The Life Lessons cards are numbered as follows:
1 The Magician
2 The High Priestess
3 The Empress
4 The Emperor
5 The Hierophant
6 The Lovers
7 The Chariot
8 Strength
9 The Hermit
10 The Wheel of Fortune
11 Justice
12 The Hanged Man
13 Death
14 Temperance
15 The Devil
16 The Tower
17 The Star
18 The Moon
19 The Sun
20 Judgement
21 The World
My birthday is 22 May, so my formula for 2026 looks like this:
2 + 2 + 5 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 19
That gives me The Sun.
The Sun is about visibility, authenticity, and being more fully yourself. I’ve been writing for decades and am about to publish my very first book online — which feels like a perfect real-world expression of this card’s energy.
It’s important to point out that you should use the formula with a grain of salt (I throw a lot of salt over my shoulder while using Tarot.) The cards are not meant to chain you to a fixed outcome. Just because your card for 2026 is The Empress doesn’t mean you should lie around and eat chocolate for a whole year – although that does sound tempting.
Have a go at the formula yourself. And if you’d like to know more about your Tarot Year Card, let me know in the comments section below.
