On it’s best day the Justice card represents karma. Receiving your just desserts. The kind of justice you find in a superhero universe where wrongs are righted by a sort of divine intervention.
I’ve just come back from seeing the latest Superman movie ‘Man Of Steel’. You know you’re getting old when you’ve lost count of how many big screen and small screen incarnations of the man with the red cape you’ve seen over the years. The first time is always the best. I still have a soft spot for Margot Kidder. She kicked ass as Lois Lane.
My eldest daughter said it was the best movie she’s ever seen. I was sceptical. Reviews were mixed. One critic said it was good up until the end which went on too long. I’d dispute that. The whole thing was too long. And it had some of the corniest lines I’ve ever heard. My favourite was after Lois Lane and Superman kissed for the first time. She said something like, ‘Our first kiss. I guess it’s all downhill from here.’ He replied, ‘That’s only if you’re kissing a human.’ Seriously!
And don’t get me started on how much needless repetitive destruction and mayhem was shown. It wasn’t even entertaining. I’d take Robert Downey Junior’s Iron Man over this dude any day. But he does save the world and the bad guys from outer space die in the end which is like the ultimate form of human justice. We rule!
One of the movie’s tag lines comes from his dad – Russell Crowe – who says, ‘What if a child dreamed of becoming something other than what society had intended? What if a child aspired to something greater?’ Superman’s justice is like Tarot’s justice. More profound than that provided by our legal systems. Fairer than the justice we have created as a society. He represents the natural justice we want versus than the cobbled-together compromise justice we actually receive. That’s why we love him so much. Even when he comes wrapped up in a pretty empty package.
Anyone else seen this movie? How would you rate it?
