Two Of Pentacles: Holding two opposing belief systems at once.
I’m a science geek AND a Tarot fan. Most peeps would assume the two are incompatible. That if you believe you can be guided by invisible forces through Tarot cards there’s no way in the world you are a follower of the scientific method. My favorite geeky Facebook page ‘I F* Love Science’ ( I f* love I F* Love Science) scoffs at astrology and Tarot on a regular basis.
But I humbly beg to differ.
I see the scientific method as an extremely useful tool for understanding the world. And when it comes to choosing between scientists and newspaper columnists on climate change I’m gonna choose the scientists every single time.
But here’s the thing.
The scientific method is only as good as the tools at its disposal. With each new invention new discoveries get made. But there are many questions still unable to answered. And when scientists can’t prove something the automatic fallback position seems to be that it doesn’t exist. Which doesn’t seem logical to me. For example, there’s no scientific proof that God exists so most who follow the scientific method argue that God is just a figment of the human imagination. But there’s no scientific proof that he/she/it doesn’t exist either. Just because you can’t prove something doesn’t exist doesn’t mean it doesn’t. Um, are you still with me?
Shakespeare declared in his famous play Macbeth that there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophies. And if anything, that’s what I believe. That we haven’t got everything figured out yet. That’s why I can be open to Tarot whilst at the same time admiring scientific achievements.
Are you a fan of the scientific method?
Your opinion is my opinion.
Excellent points. My world changed for the better when i realized the same thinking. I have a B.S., a J.D., and I’m a tarot reader.
Nice to know I’m not alone!
