The Star: Grace Under Pressure

The Star

People often labour under the mistaken belief that this card is all about peace, harmony and love, yada yada. But it appears in the deck near the end of Life Lessons Tarot (aka the Major Arcana) so you know that some serious shit is going down here. It’s the eye in the storm. Temporary relief when the chips are down. Angelic assistance. But somewhere in your life there will be a major problem that still needs resolving.

As we all know peeps show their true character in times of duress. I think of The Star card as showing grace under pressure. Something we can all aspire to.

Five Of Cups: For When Christmas Is The Saddest Time Of Year

5 Cups

I just wanted to give a shout out to all those peeps who are struggling during this festive season. When there’s someone missing at your dining table or when the holidays leave you feeling bereft and alone Christmas can be the saddest time of year. It’s especially hard when someone you love has died near Christmas. The two events can become entwined in your mind. And if you’re struggling with mental health issues forced family celebrations combined with a lack of support and structure (because even your carers are on holidays) can make it hard for you to cope.

The Five Of Cups card reminds us that no matter what or who we’ve lost (the three spilled cups in front), we still have love in our life, if only we’ll turn around and look (the two upright cups behind). It’s a great card to meditate on if this time of year is hard for you.

The Wheel Of Fortune Reversed: Same Old Same Old

The Wheel Of Fortune R

Anyone else get a major whiff of deja` vu this time of year? The same old articles trotted out on avoiding over-indulgence on Christmas Day, the mayhem of Boxing Day sales and advice on how to get a toned bod (it’s summer here in Australia). Seriously. I think newspaper editors just recycle the same stuff every year.

Albert Einstein said that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results. Yet every year we trot up to the same faces at Christmas dinner and expect to avoid the arguments we had last time round. We make the same New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, exercise more or give up smoking and expect them to work. Doh!

For me The Wheel Of Fortune Reversed is the card that represents being stuck in a rut. Repeating old patterns. Some peeps are happy to stick with the same old same old. Me, not so much.

How do you keep this time of year fresh and meaningful?

Judgement: How Helping Others Will Save Your Soul

Judgement

Without a doubt Judgement has been one of the hardest Tarot cards for me to crack. When I first started studying Tarot twenty years ago I just didn’t get it at all. Which isn’t surprising really. As the penultimate card in the Life Lessons section of the deck (aka the Major Arcana) it represents an incredibly profound and beautiful human experience. One many never truly embrace.

It’s the card that shows us how to reach The World. Nirvana.

That shows us how to save our souls.

And the secret it tells is this… Continue reading

The Tarot Of Mental Illness Revisited

I promised a lovely lady on my Facebook page ages ago that I’d republish all my medical Tarot blogs. Here’s one I found. Sorry it took so long…

I’ve had way more experience of mental health issues in the last few years than I ever wanted to so I thought it might be time to tackle the Tarot of Mental Illness in more depth. Unsurprisingly the cards involved include those in the last section of Life Lessons Tarot (aka the Major Arcana). Note: These cards might turn up reversed in a reading about mental illness.

The Devil

The Devil: Living in denial. An inability to face reality. Losing yourself in drugs. Denial that you have a mental illness. Continue reading
