I thought we might have a look today at Tarot cards associated with medical issues. NOTE: Just because these cards turn up in a reading does NOT mean you have a medical condition. As I keep on saying, there are 50 shades of Tarot, 50 possible meanings (or thereabouts), for each card. Please take the following with a large grain of salt. Some I’m sure of. Others are educated guesses.

The Tarot Of Lance Armstrong’s Confession
I started this post several weeks ago when it was the watercooler story of the day. Then put it on ice when I went away on holiday. But Lance’s very qualified confession makes it the story that just keeps on giving. There seem to be so many levels to his deception. A few more were explored tonight on a cutting edge Australian current affairs program ‘Four Corners’.
So let’s have a look at the Tarot of Lance Armstrong’s confession.
The Tarot Of The Night My Tent Broke
Okay. So I finally make it camping and even work out how to blog from my iPhone and then what happens next? My tent breaks. Sheesh! Talk about beIng tested. Here is the Tarot of The Night My Tent Broke (pictures to be added when I get back home.)
The Tarot Of The Dark Knight Rises!
I finally got around to watching The Dark Knight Rises months after everyone else. Am not a big fan of movie violence so was a bit meh about the action but enjoyed the characters and the plot. Let’s have a look at the Tarot of this movie…
The Devil: Let The Games Begin!
As I said yesterday my Tarot card for 2013 is The Devil. Now I could be wrong but I feel like I’m already experiencing the effects of this card in my life. So I thought I’d share my observations with you.
The Devil And The Mania For Gun Ownership In The U.S.
I’ve been wanting to tackle this topic ever since the terrible tragedy in Newtown last week but have been wary as this is such an emotive issue. However Tarot does have something to say about the mania for gun ownership. So (deep breath) here goes…
I guess the easy thing to conclude is that The Devil in this scenario is the boy who shot all those poor children. Full stop. No need to look any further for a culprit. Yet anyone who performs such a heinous deed is clearly suffering from mental health issues. Which is not to absolve him. I’m big on accepting responsibility for your actions (as is Tarot). I just don’t believe anyone acts in isolation. We are all influenced by our environment (so says the Hierophant card.) And we have a responsibility as a society to examine what we are doing to contribute to the escalation of situations like this (Judgement). I’m not alone in thinking this. Even in the United States where the right to bear arms is enshrined like gospel in the Constitution voices of dissent are being raised.
Now. I have many beautiful American friends who love their guns who have been frantically protesting on social media how it’s not guns that kill, it’s people. That rather than getting rid of guns we should be handing them out like jellybeans to teachers for them to keep handy in their classrooms. And of course there is a logic to that argument. However there are so many arguments against.
First of all. There is no evidence to show that having a gun keeps you safe. Killers have the element of surprise on their side. Logic dictates that a teacher interrupted while reading a story to her class would not have the time to reach for the handgun in her desk drawer in the face of someone with a semi-automatic in their hand.
If the evidence shows anything it is that children are more likely to die when guns are kept nearby. Just by accident. A gun kept in the home is apparently ten times more likely to be used on a member of the household than an intruder.
The perpetrator in this situation had apparently been whipped into a state of stress by a mother who believed the apocalypse was coming. Imagine how different the outcome of his mental distress if he’d never been shown how to shoot a firearm. If they weren’t kept at hand in his home?
Then there’s the fact that if there are more guns around they are bound to be used more. The Harvard Injury Control Research Centre has found substantial evidence to indicate that more guns means more murders. This holds true whether you’re looking at different countries or different states.
In Australia where the right to bear arms does not play a big part in our national psyche we had our own debate about the whole gun ownership thing a few years back when a man (who I refuse to mention by name) went on a rampage in Tasmania killing 35 people. The upshot was our Prime Minister at the time instigated the biggest gun buyback in our history as well as tighter rules for licensing and safe storage of those firearms remaining in public hands. And he was a Conservative i.e. Like a Republican. This law did not end gun ownership in Australia but reduced the number in private hands by one-fifth especially the kinds most likely to be used in mass murder. In the 18 years before the law took effect Australia suffered 13 mass shootings but not one in the 14 years since. The murder rate with firearms has also dropped by more than 40 percent and the suicide rate by more than half.
So that’s the statistics as far as I know. But what does Tarot say?
Tarot says that when we make choices out of fear we are living in The Devil card. Most Americans own a gun for protection. Out of FEAR for their safety. In the aftermath of last week’s tragedy one American said, ‘Americans love their guns more than children.’ Of course that’s not true. But the fear of being assaulted seems to make them blind to every other consideration. And that is very much The Devil according to Tarot.
Do you think the U.S government should crack down on gun ownership?
Susan Sarandon: Tarot Woman
American actress Susan Sarandon was recently quoted in Elle magazine’s ‘Woman In Hollywood’ issue saying this:
“I think the struggle is to live an authentic life. Often, being comfortable and courting the illusion of safety cannot coexist with being authentically who you are.”
This is a great summation of the Tarot philosophy. More than anything Tarot encourages you to be true to yourself. (And when you’ve achieved that it encourages you to give back to the community.) The first official card in Life Lessons Tarot called The Magician signals your potential. The journey from there to The Sun card (number 19) is all about bringing that potential into the light. Birthing your true self. The danger along the way is that you’ll get stuck in The Devil experience, choosing comfort over authenticity, a nice house and accessories over living your dream.
Susan goes on to say the following:
Anytime I have drastically changed my life – which has happened a number of times and, I hope, will happen many more – it’s always been a mixture of terror and exhilaration and discovery. But I believe that being surprised and being somewhere that’s uncomfortable because it’s unknown is really one of the main rules to live by.”
This is a wonderful description of someone busting out of their Devil rut via the dynamic terrifying exhilarating energy of the next card along in Life Lessons Tarot, The Tower, which we’ve discussed before. If you refuse to let go of your crutches sooner or later life will do it for you by causing some kind of drama that forces change. But someone who’s in tune with their inner self will feel the need and make the changes for themselves. Aka Susan. And all power to her I say!
The Tarot Of Fifty Shades Of Grey
Even though I’ve been banging on about how Tarot cards come in 50 shades I’ve only just started reading this trilogy. Being the Four of Pentacles cheapskate that I am (remember, we discussed this) I get the books I want to read from the library and as you can imagine there was a veeeeery long wait list for this one. Anyway, consider this the first installment of my Tarot book review because I’m sure I’ll have more to say on the subject when I finish. But even after 174 pages there are some aspects of this story that really pop out at me (not to mention that are eye-popping in general.)
For starters, Christian Grey. While some may see him as… Continue reading
The Tarot Of Frankenstorm (Or Any Natural Disaster For That Matter)
The Tarot cards that refer to a disaster of the scale of Frankenstorm come near the end of Life Lessons Tarot (otherwise known as the Major Arcana.) They are the heavy-hitters of the Tarot pack. The sequence of events might be summed up as follows: Continue reading
The Lance Armstrong Story Tarot Style
Lance Armstrong is all over the news at the mo so I thought it’d be fun to tell his story Tarot style. You know, as it’s been reported. I’m not his judge and jury.
Seven of Swords: The Tactician. Otherwise known as The Sneaky Bastard.
Six of Wands: The Winner. In a reading this card would come up in the past position for Lance.
Wheel of Fortune: Experiencing ups and downs. And when you’ve been way way up you’re bound to fall way way down. But kudos to him for beating cancer and getting back on his bike. There is still something to admire there.
The Tower: The fall from grace. Breakdowns (that would be his team-mates). Revelation (that would be about him).
The Devil: An obvious choice. Living in denial. Making winning your god.
The Moon: Revealing hidden depths. And boy are they murky. Makes you want to take a long hot shower when you listen to his team mate’s stories.
The World: And this is all happening on a world stage.
Three of Swords: There is real grief being felt over Lance. People feel like they’ve been stabbed in the heart, and fair enough say I. He was our hero. Note how the swords in the card don’t drip blood i.e. The wound isn’t fresh. This is because the betrayal occurred in the past.
I feel a multi-million dollar tell-all confessional book contract coming on. But what would I know being the non-psychic Tarot reader that I am? Sometimes my intuition is spot on and other times I couldn’t hit the future with a ten foot pole if I tried.
Feel free to add your own suggestions re the Lance Armstrong story in the comments section below. Anyone?
