The Tarot Of Fifty Shades Of Grey

unknown

Even though I’ve been banging on about how Tarot cards come in 50 shades I’ve only just started reading this trilogy. Being the Four of Pentacles cheapskate that I am (remember, we discussed this) I get the books I want to read from the library and as you can imagine there was a veeeeery long wait list for this one. Anyway, consider this the first installment of my Tarot book review because I’m sure I’ll have more to say on the subject when I finish. But even after 174 pages there are some aspects of this story that really pop out at me (not to mention that are eye-popping in general.)

For starters, Christian Grey. While some may see him as… Continue reading

Five Of Swords: Are You The Bully Or The Victim?

5 SwordsFive of Swords: A man in the foreground holding three swords looks mighty pleased with himself. Two other swords lie discarded on the ground near his feet. In the far distance a man appears to be crying by the water’s edge whilst yet another heads in his direction as if to offer comfort. Storm clouds fill the sky. Some kind of argument has clearly occurred leaving both a winner, a loser and the man in between.

The number five represents struggle street. Swords are our thoughts and words. In real life swords can cause a lot of damage when used as a weapon. And we all know from experience that the saying ‘sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me’ is a wishful one. Just like swords words can wound. Deeply.

Getting this card in a reading suggests you are involved in some kind of power struggle. And the question always is: Who do you identify with most in the card?

If you see yourself as the winner this card suggests you may need to take a long hard look at yourself. Reassess the cost of your victories (like, your soul, man.)

If you see yourself as the loser this card suggests you might need to try another way because you’re not going to win this battle head on.

And if you are the one offering comfort, bless you.

So. Which one are you? The bully or the victim or the one caught in between?

The Star In Action On The (Not-So) Mean Streets Of New York

The Star

So I mentioned a few days ago that according to Tarot after you have a Tower experience like the Frankenstorm that has just ravaged the northern coast of the U.S. you automatically move towards a Star experience. And voila, today one of my favourite websites, Jezebel, discusses how exactly this is happening on the streets of New York. People are being nicer to one another. I myself have been particularly taken by photos of New Yorkers recharging their phones on the sidewalk courtesy of strangers. Once upon a time we rushed to get food and fuel, now we rush to recharge (Completely understandably because we want to let family and friends know we’re okay, but still, lol.) The Star is Continue reading

The Tarot Of Introverts

I’m a massive introvert. By that I mean I need a lot of time by myself. This is because there’s a party going on in my head all the time that demands attention. Party, imagination, stories, other worlds, same diff. I think a lot of writers are introverts. My friends and family find it hard to believe I’m one of these strange creatures because I actually like talking to people. You can tell. But there’s the thing, despite the popular misconception being an introvert doesn’t make you anti-social. It just makes you feel really really tired when you’ve had people in your face all day long. More than is normal tired.

So I’ve been pondering the Tarot of Introverts and here’s what I’ve come up with: Continue reading

The Tarot Of Big Brother

unknown

The Big Brother reality television show is drawing to a close this week in Australia. If you’ve never heard of it (?) the premise is that a group of people live together in a house continuously watched by TV cameras. Their only contact with the outside world is a disembodied voice called Big Brother who tells them what to do in order to stay in the house and get food. Every week the contestants nominate a few housemates for eviction and the public votes which one should be thrown out. The last man or woman standing wins a large cash prize. There was an absolutely brilliant take-off of the Big Brother show involving zombies a couple of years back called ‘Dead Set’. I highly recommend it if you like a good scare and a bit of a laugh.

I’m a huge sucker for the Big Brother phenomenon which is one of those TV shows you tend to either love or loathe. What I enjoy watching are the small incremental ways the housemates change (or your impression of them changes) as the show unfolds.

There are two Tarot cards that I think sum up the Big Brother experience as follows: Continue reading

The Eight Of Cups: It’s The Journey Stupid!

unknown-1

I watched a beautiful movie tonight called ‘The Way’ starring Martin Sheen. It’s about a man, Thomas Avery, who goes to France to collect the remains of his only child and ends up completing the journey his son started on the Camino de Santiago otherwise known as the Way of St. James. This is a famous pilgrimage route that covers hundreds of kilometers from France through northern Spain. Traditionally you walk it starting from your front door and ending at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the place St James’ remains are said to be buried. The story of Thomas’s journey along The Way is one of those old-fashioned tales that moves slowly but grows on you with each step (boom boom).

The Way reeks of this card…

The Downside Of The Four Of Cups: The Ungrateful Wretch!

4 CupsThe Four Of Cups: A man sits facing three cups. Another cup is held out by a disembodied hand at his side.

The man’s arms are crossed, his legs are crossed, his face just looks cross. His back’s up against a tree. His lowered eyes indicate deep absorption in his own problems. The body language speaks loud and clear. Continue reading

Death In Its Infinite Variety

My thoughts today are with the families and friends of those who have passed away during  the once-in-a-lifetime weather event happening along the U.S. east coast. So I thought I’d explore different types of death Tarot style. Keeping in mind that the Death card doesn’t always mean someone is going to die. Far from it. But sometimes it does. Death during a freak event such as Hurricane Sandy would be represented as follows:

The Tarot Of Frankenstorm (Or Any Natural Disaster For That Matter)

The Tarot cards that refer to a disaster of the scale of Frankenstorm come near the end of Life Lessons Tarot (otherwise known as the Major Arcana.) They are the heavy-hitters of the Tarot pack. The sequence of events might be summed up as follows: Continue reading
